Indie-rock band Tempesst announce new album

London-based indie-rock quintet Tempesst have announced their debut album Must Be A Dream will be released September 30th, via Pony Recordings. Along with the album announcement, the band are also releasing the album’s first single “On The Run”, out today alongside a candid studio video directed by the band’s very own Andy Banjanin.

A vivid, expansive sample of the band’s upcoming full length; “On The Run” and the forthcoming album follow Tempesst’s two previously released EP’s ‘Adult Wonderland’ and ‘Doomsday’, both widely lauded for their ’60s and ’70s influenced indie-psych fusion.

On new single “On The Run” the band layer vocal harmonies on top of reverb heavy instrumentation orchestrated far and wide into a massive psychedelic pop exploration.  It’s all brought back to earth by Tempesst vocalist Toma Banjanin’s slithering baritone and stories of death, substance abuse and the loss of innocence forever.

Speaking on the new single, singer Toma shared: “‘On The Run’ was written about a close friend who disappeared for a decade and returned as someone completely different, and it’s an ongoing trauma. When I connected the music to the lyrics to try and finish the song, it felt like it had a rolling rhythm, so the chorus fell into place from there. For me, this song carries a lot more emotional weight.”

Consisting of Sunshine Coast, Australia born twin brothers Toma (vocals, guitars) and Andy Banjanin (drums); the band is rounded out by fellow Australian’s Kane Reynolds (keys) and Blake Misipeka (bass), and Swiss/American guitarist Eric Weber. Now all residing in London where upcoming debut album Must Be A Dream was written and recorded, Tempesst have become well known for their sweeping, psych-touched indie rock.

Produced by longstanding collaborator Elliot Heinrich, and mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (known for his work with Parquet Courts, Temples, Yak, and Sorry), Must Be A Dream came together at the band’s very own Pony Studios, a studio space that Tempesst built themselves in Hackney, East London. A massive step forward from their previous short format releases, Must Be A Dream is a wide-eyed excursion of folk-tinged psychedelia with nods to Spiritualized, Galaxie 500, the Flaming Lips and the Beach Boys.

Ten tracks of psychedelic pop grandiosity, combining the classic teachings of Laurel Canyon-esque folk harmonization with bombastic sensibilities found in the works of Love, ELO, Pink Floyd, Wings and more. Must Be A Dream is a paradox of complexity and musical prowess shrouded beneath deceivingly simple pop melodies, producing a dense, sun-kissed record that explores themes of identity, purpose, ageing, love, loss, substance abuse, the death of loved ones and remembering the beauty beneath it all.

Tempesst’s new single “On The Run” is out now, released June 17th. Debut album Must Be A Dream is released September 30th, via Pony Recordings.

Band Delta Spirit announce new album after six-year hiatus

Delta Spirit have announced their first new album in six years, What Is There, out on September 11th via New West Records.

Their New West Records debut follows their acclaimed 2014 studio album Into The Wide, of which Uncut said the band “… progressively unleash waves of measured ferocity… toward payoffs that are staggering in their intensity.” What Is There was recorded at Sonic Ranch outside of El Paso, TX, produced by the band and mixed by Tchad Blake (U2, Black Keys), and is dedicated to the memory of their friend and musical inspiration, Richard Swift.

The powerful, cinematic video was directed by Michael Parks Randa and shot during the Covid-19 pandemic at over 30 locations throughout North America. After speaking with roughly 70 cinematographers to learn about their particular circumstances, Randa directed 30 individuals across the country to safely document an intimate portrait of Americans in isolation. Randa said “The result is a celebration of the collaborative spirit of filmmaking, a successful experiment in safely navigating production during the pandemic, and a mosaic of America during this time.”

Formed in Southern California in 2005, Delta Spirit took an extended break after supporting their acclaimed effort Into The Wide. “In 2015, we were getting along like family gets along,” admits frontman Matthew Logan Vasquez. “That means sometimes we didn’t like each other too much. We were just growing apart. When we took a break and the band stopped, the friendships got an opportunity to come back.” He offers, “Personality-wise, our band is five contrarians trying to agree on an idea. When your similarity is that you’re contrarian, it’s tough. But when things work out, it’s incredible.”

Over the past six years, Matthew Logan Vasquez has released and toured behind three celebrated solo albums, multi-instrumentalist Kelly Winrich launched a career as a producer (Nathaniel Rateliff), while bassist Jonathan Jameson, guitarist Will McLaren, and drummer Brandon Young collaborated and toured with Sam Outlaw, Mikky Ekko, the Los Angeles band Muna, among others. The band members now call Manhattan, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Austin, and Montreal home, and reconvened in Brooklyn, NY for a jam session in 2018. Vasquez says, “When we played together, we found the same joy and took it deeper.”

Delta Spirit not only return, but move forward together on What Is There. They wrote and recorded from a new place informed by maturity gained by their journey, break, and reunion. They locked into the process together and eventually found the sweet spot where they were all on the same page. Vasquez says, “I’m really proud of our body of work, but especially proud of where everybody has gotten to now. I have a lot of hope for us. I’m grateful for everyone in this band. There’s a lot of raw honesty in the music. It’s a record for right now, instead of pandering to the past. It’s the next step.” As much as What Is There reflects their journey thus far, it also ushers them into new territory as both musicians and, most importantly, friends.

What Is There will be available across digital platforms, on compact disc, and standard black vinyl. A limited to 500 Clear with Black Marble Vinyl Edition will be available at Independent Retailers, a limited to 350 Coke Bottle Clear & White, Hand-Poured Color Vinyl Edition will be available exclusively through the Magnolia Record Club, while an exclusive Opaque Yellow & Black Marble Vinyl edition is available for Pre-Order NOW via NEW WEST RECORDS.

Dark and atmospheric PINERO|SERENE release second single, ‘Dead Flowers’

Alternative dream-pop duo PINERO|SERENE gears up to release their debut EP, Dark Matter on the 12th of July. Ahead of that, they have shared their second single, ‘Dead Flowers’ premiered by TMRW Magazine. The single was officially released last Friday, 28th of June.

Based in the artistic hub of London’s East End, PINERO|SERENE create dark, atmospheric soundscapes, through a unique and paralleled songwriting collaboration, that personifies emotional experience. Neeq moved to London from Berkshire to pursue a passion for photography and music. She dabbled in spoken word poetry, fascinated by the potency of words, and has since honed her skills to the development of abstract songwriting and production skills. Cheryl began playing bass at age thirteen, and toured around Germany and The Netherlands in her early twenties, eventually settling in London.

“‘Dead Flowers’ is the last in the chain of a four-track EP, which takes you on a journey through personal evolution. It’s about facing the fear of letting go, to make space for a new dimension of existence and perception.” – PINERO|SERENE on their latest single.

The music video for their single ‘Take My Soul’ was also premiered last month, on the 14th, with positive responses so far. You can watch it below

Infectious indie rock single shared by UV Rays

Last Friday indie rock band UV Rays announced their new EP, ‘The Right Stuff’, and shared lead single “Overrated.” Under The Radar premiered the track, praising, “The single takes its cues from ’90s emo, opening with an in media res beginning that evolves into an explosive chorus that mixes bright vocal harmonies with a pleasingly discordant wall of distorted guitars.”

Coming quickly on the heels of the Try and Begin EP, the Brooklyn four-piece UV Rays have returned with The Right Stuff EP, a three-song collection of infectious indie rock that further establishes them as some of the most exciting songwriters in the city. While Try and Begin cast a wide net, demonstrating UV Rays’ knack for melding complex instrumental arrangements with pop sensibilities, The Right Stuff presents a more streamlined side of the band that proudly puts their dynamic vocal melodies at the centre of the action.

Opening track “Overrated,” sung by drummer Erica Warner, begins with a thicket of snarling guitars before launching headfirst into one of the band’s catchiest choruses to date, despite its menacing cult-y overtones. “We’re genuinely not as selectively welcoming as the song portrays, but like, close enough,” Warner quips.

The band draws inspiration from artists such as Nirvana, the Beatles and, the Buzzcocks.

Gold Field’s explore psychedelic bliss on new album ‘Dalawa’

Australian indie-electronic band Gold Fields has released their sophomore album Dalawa, their first album since 2013.The album title is a nod to guitarist Vin Andanar’s heritage and meaning ‘two’ in Filipino (Tagalog).

Gold Fields is the combined talents of Mark Robert Fuller, Vinci Andanar, Luke Peldys, Rob Clifton and Ryan D’Sylva. Originally formed in Ballarat, Victoria, the now Melbourne-based five-piece have blurred the lines between between indie, electronic, disco, and psych-rock.

It’s clear that Gold Fields have not lost their (golden) touch – Dalawa is fascinating, pretty and groovy all at once. Filled to the brim with hypnotic rhythms and neo-psychedelic trippiness, this is an EP that does as well on headphones while you lie back staring into space, as on the dancefloor. The release was accompanied by a video for ‘Glow’, complete with moody psychedelic projections, and dark silhouettes.

The band explains: “The making of Dalawa was a multi-dimensional journey across early adulthood… It saw us through some big life events… some really mind opening experiences, and all during some very interesting times around the world. Dalawa is definitely the record we wanted to make. In a way, it seemed to make itself.. It seems like we plucked the songs bit by bit from somewhere they already existed and pieced them back together into this record. Vin and Ry produced the whole thing and it was amazing to have Tony Espie (The Avalanches) mixing the record. Dalawa started out by us just experimenting and we let the sounds and the music take us on a journey. It’s been a real pleasure to create this and we can’t wait to put it out there.”

Catch the band’s album launch shows if you’re in Oz and feel like having your mind blown.
20 April, Howler Melbourne, VIC. More details.
24 April – The Landsdowne, Sydney, NSW. More details.

Big Thief Share New Single ‘Cattails’ & Expand US Tour

Big Thief have shared ‘Cattails’, the second new song off their forthcoming album U.F.O.F. This follows the woozily gorgeous first song, ‘UFOF’ (which Pitchfork named “Best New Track”) and gives listeners a glimpse into the breadth of moods contained within this new collection. ‘Cattails’ begins as a simple song, a finger-picked accompaniment from Adrianne Lenker and propulsive drums from James Krivchenia. As the song progresses, a glorious hum begins to take hold underneath, with drones and twinkling piano joining the throng, as the song seems to become lighter than air and take flight. Lenker says this of ‘Cattails’:

“Cattails came about while we were at the studio in Washington in the pine forest. Writing it was just one of those electric multicolored waves of connectivity just sweeping through my body. I stayed up late finishing the song and the next morning was stomping around playing it over and over again. We thought why not just record it, so James sat at the drums and we practiced and by the time we’d finished practicing, Dom Monks – our engineer – had already sneakily set up mics and recorded it. It was beautiful that he’d captured it right away because when James and I were playing it felt like a little portal in the fabric had opened and we were just flying. Listening back to it makes me cry sometimes.”

U.F.O.F., F standing for ‘Friend’, is the third record by Big Thief, set to be released on May 3rd. Adrianne Lenker (guitar, vocals), Buck Meek (guitar), Max Oleartchik (bass), and James Krivchenia (drums) have spent the last 4 years on an incessant world tour, winning the devotion of an enthusiastic and rapidly expanding audience.

U.F.O.F. was recorded in rural western Washington at Bear Creek Studios. In a large cabin-like room, the band set up their gear to track live with engineer Dom Monks and producer Andrew Sarlo, who was also behind their first two back-to-back releases, Masterpiece (2016) and Capacity (2017).

“Making friends with the unknown… All my songs are about this,” says Lenker; “If the nature of life is change and impermanence, I’d rather be uncomfortably awake in that truth than lost in denial.”

U.F.O.F. is available for pre-order on LP, CD, and digital. Limited translucent orange vinyl is available via the Big Thief store and 4AD store + your local indie retailer. Limited forest green vinyl will be available through Vinyl Me Please.

Aldous Harding announces new album and shares delightfully bizarre video for ‘The Barrel’

Aldous Harding will release her third album, Designer, on April 26. First single, ‘The Barrel’ has been launche, with a delightfully off-kilter accompanying video.

Designer finds the New Zealander hitting her creative stride. After the sleeper success of Party (internationally lauded and crowned Rough Trade Shops’ Album of 2017), Harding came off a 100-date tour last summer and went straight into the studio with a collection of songs written on the road. Reuniting with John Parish, producer of Party, Harding spent 15 days recording and 10 days mixing at Rockfield Studios, Monmouth and Bristol’s J&J Studio and Playpen. From the bold strokes of opening track ‘Fixture Picture’, there is an overriding sense of an artist confident in their work, with contributions from Huw Evans (H. Hawkline), Stephen Black (Sweet Baboo), drummer Gwion Llewelyn and violinist Claire MacTaggart broadening and complimenting Harding’s rich and timeless songwriting.

Directed by Martin Sagadin, the visuals for Aldous Harding‘s first single ‘The Barrel’ can be viewed below:

Austrian trio, Lex Audrey, releases debut album, ‘No Intention of Changing the World’ and it’s a jack of all trades of sounds

Lex Audrey have already proven that they can break into the international music scene with their singles ‘NSFL’ and ‘>>GodGiven<<‘ raking in the streams on a continuous basis. They released their debut album No Intention of Changing the World on the 8th of February via LasVegas Records and it’s an album that will keeps on delivering with every single track.

The title of their debut album feels almost tongue in cheek. It’s clear tha they have every intention of trying to change the world. This album is filled with tracks that comments on the fast-paced and digital society we find ourselves in. Lex Audrey manages to tiptoe perfectly between using organic and digital instrumentation. Big guitars, big electronic sweeps, it’s all in here. You can’t help but fall in love with their feel-good uplifting sound, however as soon as you dip into the lyrical content; you will discover a whole new world of cynicism, social commentary and deep-rooted introspection.

No Intention of Changing the World sees Lex Audrey produce a stellar debut record filled with 12-tracks that never lets up. This album ranges from catchy upbeat tracks like ‘Winter II’, ‘Mexican Standoff’ and ‘NSFL’ while flawlessly also including slower gems such as ‘Lost To You’, ‘From Beginning’, and ‘No Intention of Changing the World’. Lex Audrey creates their sound with a spectrum of styles especially on tracks like ‘Little Elephant’, ‘TikTikBoom!’ and ‘The Key’, where it’s clear they had a lot of fun experimenting with different elements. If you’re into big tracks that remind you of classic arena rock, then the anthemic ‘Get Me Anywhere’, the synth-heavy ‘Metaphor’ and the massive guitar solos of ‘>>godgiven<<’ should be right up your alley. It’s difficult to place any of the tracks on No Intention of Changing the World into a singular box, as this album manages to tick every box. Synth, indie, electronica, rock, pop, dance, ballads; Lex Audrey can do it all.

Lex Audrey vocalist Niklas said about the album, “It‘s hard to summarize this album in just a few sentences, as we worked very long and hard on it. A lot of the songs are very critical about how technology sometimes has a negative impact on society and the way people interact with each other. We don‘t know if our listeners feel the same way about it yet, but we can‘t wait to find out.

Manchester indie quartet The Slow Readers Club share video for ‘On The TV’ from their latest album ‘Build A Tower’

Manchester four-piece The Slow Readers Club have shared the video for their new single, ‘On The TV’, ahead of their sold out headline tour next month which will see the band play the biggest shows of their career so far.

The video blends brooding and atmospheric imagery with a mysterious narrative, cut between shots of the band performing the track in a TV studio. Set against the driving and anthemic track, the video creates an unnerving ambience to match its anxious lyricism.

Watch the official music video for ‘On The TV’ by The Slow Readers Club below

The track is taken from the band’s new album, Build A Tower, which was released in May this year and went straight into the Official UK album chart Top 20 at number 18, 10 in the physical album chart, 4 in the vinyl chart, 4 in the indie album chart and Number 1 in the cassette chart, as well as tracks receiving extensive support from BBC 6 Music and Radio X. In September they released For All Here To Observe, a collection of acoustic reworks including tracks spanning their entire career.
