:papercutz Announce New Single, Album

Portugal-based electronic duo :papercutz have announced the release of the first single ‘Trust / Surrender’ off their forthcoming album ‘King Ruiner’.

Formed as a side project in 2005 in Portugal’s second largest city, Porto, producer Bruno Miguel is solely responsible for :papercutz’s musical direction, with Catarina Miranda providing vocals. Adolescent piano lessons and a discman from his father have seemed to have been the seed that started the wave of interest needed to see :papercutz to fruition. Drawing influence from artists such as Kate Bush, Björk, Brian Eno, Dead Can Dance, The Creatures, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Peter Gabriel, sharing appeal for fans of Bat for Lashes, Fever Ray, Zola Jesus and Glasser, :papercutz’s sound incorporates layered pop vocals, warm analog synth polyrhythms, atmospheric textures, urban beats and tribal percussion.

Of their latest track, ‘Trust/Surrender’, the duo states: “The tension between doubt, joy and wonder is more present than ever on the new release and the high energy track showcases the band lyrically dealing with the illusion of control and the acceptance of uncertainty. Sharing a bond with past works, the organic electronics ‘Lylac’, cinematic experimental ambient ‘Do Outro lado Do Espelho (Lylac ambient reworks)’ and dark epic percussion of ‘The Blur Between Us’, we found inspiration in traditional tribal music with a focus on recordings with choral like qualities. African music in particular carries such a forceful and celebratory strength that serves as the perfect background for the album’s narrative about the struggle and anxiety when finding your way through broken ambitions. Trust/Surrender’ is a song about the illusion of control and embracing uncertainty”, explains Bruno.

Expect updates about :papercutz and their upcoming album ‘King Ruiner’.

Pure Comedy From Father John Misty

Angel-voiced, shaggy-bearded indie darling Father John Misty will release his 3rd studio album Pure Comedy on the 7th of April through Bella Union (Sub Pop in the US).

Father John – real name John Tillman – co-produced the album with Jonathan Wilson.

A music video (see below) for the titular track has been released, an earnest animation/newsreel and YouTube footage mash-up that sees Tillman employing his free-association lyrical style and reflecting on the general state of the world through lines like “Their confusion somehow makes them more sure/They build fortunes poisoning their offspring.”

Tillman has also released a 25-minute short film in support of the album, a documentary about the making of the music called Pure Comedy: The Film.

Recorded in Nashville, this video – a cover of Jesse Ware’s “Say You Love Me” – is an exquisite introduction to McGrath’s bewitching, emotive voice and sensitive guitar playing.

Indie Rockers Shadow Band to Release Debut Album

Philadelphia based indie/psych outfit Shadow Band will release Wilderness of Love, their debut album, through Mexican Summer on February 24th.

Drawing inspiration from humankind’s “declining relationship to the natural world”, the album offers reflective, sombre meditations on this theme from the songwriting pen of Mike Bruno, set to swirling, miasmic guitar and synth soundscapes.

First track “Eagle Unseen”showcases the band’s appealingly homespun sound, with gorgeous layered vocals and haunting melodic phrases.

Billy Corgan Announces New Project “Thirty Days”

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has announced a project entitled “Thirty Days” which will see him touring the country informally visiting various places with “no destination”, filming everything that happens along the way.

In a video posted to Facebook, he confirmed,“There will be new musical pieces, interviews with people, and we’re gonna try to document this journey and try to come up with some sort of collective vision”. According to the shoegaze pioneer, there will also be “three projects that are involved.”

The first, called “50 By 50” to celebrate his upcoming 50th birthday will be a collection of 50 of his favorite original songs “from all my years of writing… not necessarily my greatest songs, because obviously opinions differ on those, but maybe a sort of personal reflection.” The songs will be available as he travels, with fans invited to provide feedback on which ones he should include. The overarching plan here is to record songs for a year-end compilation.

Second, is a cover song album of “10 to 12” songs. And finally, Corgan will also be writing a new album.

“I am sort of remiss to play new music too soon, so I won’t necessarily be sharing that music, but I’d like to at least talk about some of the process involved.” Rick Rubin is confirmed to be involved.

“Last time, I kinda just took Route 66 and headed west,” Corgan said, speaking on the traveling aspect of “Thirty Days.” “This time we’re really gonna go all over… I think we’ll probably go to the Carolinas at some point, maybe down to Louisiana, across Texas… visit some of my conspiratorial friends.”
